Trans-Affirming Care: Clinical Approaches and Psychotherapy for Trans Individuals

November 17, 2023 | 12:00 to 2:00 pm Eastern Time

Presenter: Devon Ojeda, PhD

Target Audience: Clinical Social Workers

Content level: Beginner to Advanced

CE credits: 2 (Clinical)

About the webinar:

Presenter Devon Ojeda has been involved with Trans-Affirming Care for years and they have great understanding, knowledge, education and expertise with the Trans Community. This clinical presentation is designed to build provider comfort and competency in supporting transgender, intersex, and gender-non-conforming patients/clients in a clinical setting, as well as empowering providers with the necessary insights to effectively advocate for improved socio-political conditions of transgender communities, outside of the clinical setting. Devon's presentation displays the challenges and obstacles that many Trans Individuals face when seeking mental health services. For many decades, this population has suffered and has been denied a multitude of societal services. Today this remains a challenge in both urban and rural settings. At times, the Clinical Social Worker may be the only person available to assist the Trans Individual with mental health concerns, personal wellness, relationship issues, professional obstacles, acceptance by society, family, friends, and new acquaintances.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this webinar participants will be able to:

  1. Define the principles and practical applications of Trans-Affirming Care.
  2. Describe the psychotherapy needs of Trans Clients which includes inclusive mental health support.
  3. Demonstrate they comprehend the challenges and disparities faced by Trans Individuals.
  4. Explain different clinical approaches and therapeutic modalities used in Trans-Affirming Care, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Care, Narrative Therapy, and other techniques as well as the importance of cultural competence.
  5. Identify the unique mental health needs and concerns specific to transgender individuals, including gender dysphoria, social transitioning, identity exploration, coming out experiences and intersectional issues related to race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.
  6. Utilize strategies for a safe, non-judgmental, supportive therapeutic environment that fosters trust and openness for Trans Clients, including insights into building a solid therapeutic alliance and effectively addressing trans-related issues within the therapeutic setting.
  7. Describe ways to advocate for transgender rights and equitable access to mental health resources.

    About the instructor:
