Social Work and the Arts; Healing You, Healing Us: Leveraging the Arts for the Betterment of All

April 28, 2023 | 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Eastern Time

Presenter: Dr. Taylor Ellis

Target Audience: Clinical Social Workers

Content level: Entry to Advanced

CE credits: 3 (Clinical)

About the webinar:

The workshop is designed to explore the relationship between social work and the arts and how practitioners can integrate the arts into their practice and personal lives. Despite being an integral part of the history of Social Work in the United States, the arts are an often forgotten or overlooked tool that has the power to heal individuals, families, and communities. This workshop will begin by providing a historical perspective on how Jane Addams and Ellen Gates-Star prioritized the arts in the Hull House, and how the quest for professionalization has affected our willingness to acknowledge and embrace this part of our professional identity. This will lead into a discussion on the professional use of self and how we can enhance our lives and practice by including the arts. Finally, we will explore a series of arts-based tools that practitioners can use at all stages of the therapeutic process, discuss work with clients at various levels of practice, and determine how to develop a self-reflective practice.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this webinar participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the historical relationship between the arts and social work practice in the United States and how it connects to the profession today.
  2. Integrate arts-based tools/activities into their everyday practice and lives.
  3. Explain how the arts can be utilized in social work education and practice for the betterment of clients at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.
